The week after our leadership training in the city, we traveled out to two villages for our regular monthly village programs. We arrived early to Yajaira’s house in hopes to teach her how to make a new bracelet for our jewelry line. Her family said she had already left to walk to the program. We set out to the little church just a few block away. We found her at a little soda shop on the side of the road. She greeted us with a hugs smile and a kiss on the cheek. Before we could ask how she was doing she excitedly pointed down the road to a young man standing. “I went to his house like you said and I taught him the Bible stories you taught me and he learned them! He wants to come to the program today to learn more!”

We had found the young deaf man, Norvin, 2 years ago. He attended 1 program and decided he didn’t want to continue because he was bored and had to work (he was the only male attendant and didn’t find hanging out with a bung of older women and little girls his cup of tea). Norvin, unexpectedly showed up at camp and caused quite a ruckus and was a handful to keep up with! He had got caught doing something unacceptable and after cleaning up the camp as punishment that night we prayed from him. The look of confusion on his face as Travis prayed from him was priceless and I thought his face was going to get stuck like that it was so prominent. Something happened in his heart that night and the next morning as he suddenly became very compliant and encouraging the other young men to participate in the bible verse chants. After the morning session, he approached several of the volunteers asking about the “Jesus stuff.” Seeds were planted.
Back at the soda shop we continued to practice the jewelry making skills with Yajaira as we waved for Norvin to come join us. He was friendly and excited to be there! I asked him doubtfully to what Yajaira had taught him and he promptly told the entire story of creation. When he finished he said, “Yajaira said I could learn more of the Bible today!” The seeds were watered. And that he did! He sat on the edge of his chair, without blinking, taking in each work that Nancy and Orlan taught as they reviewed the ways we can have “Strong Love”. I have a feeling he is going to grow into a fine young man passionate for Christ! Please join us in praying that it would be so!

We have also been to visit Ana, Yesmine, Ondina and Lucilia (leaders from the training). They have also been to visit and teach other deaf in their village since the training, been praying by name for each person in their village, and have been incredibly helpful during the programs with Signs of Love.

Please continue to pray for each of these young leaders that they would stand strong against adversity, that they would have wisdom and love as they teach and that they would continue to obey and turn to Jesus for hope and encouragement and direction as they share His love with others!
